. . . and we certainly did--do. We wanted to go to the John Day Fossil Beds but it's been so hot that we decided to head up to the Olympic National Forest instead. Finding only glorified trailer park campsites (KOA-style), we were almost to Canada when we began to realize the beauty of Oregon's coast. Turned back and found a camp four hours later just north of Long Beach, WA. Car camping is really quite unpleasant, we now know. Next trip will take place in a cabin (such as this) or in the deep woods.

Only stay in campgrounds if they are closed. There are some nice car campgrounds. The forest service campgrounds tend to be more secluded. ONP campgrounds are mostly just about cramming as many people into as small of a space as possible. Same thing with the expensive over-priced Washington State Campgrounds. They are all crowded and nasty during the peak season.
